Overview
Keflavik (KEF) is Iceland's main international airport, located on the Reykjanes Peninsula 50km from Reykjavik. A compact, stylish airport with Viking-themed architecture and excellent facilities. Many transatlantic flights stop here en route, making it a natural layover destination — Iceland Air's 'stopover' programme encourages 1–7 day Iceland stays at no extra cost.
Transport to city center
Flybus+ to BSÍ bus terminal in Reykjavik (45 min, ISK 3,999) — connects to all major hotels with a transfer. Reykjavik Excursions also operates. Taxi: ISK 15,000–20,000 (very expensive). No rail connection.
Wi-Fi
Free unlimited WiFi at Keflavik — connect to the airport network; no time limit.
Lounges
Icelandair Saga Lounge (Priority Pass eligible), multiple lounges accessible with premium tickets. The Saga Lounge offers skyr, Icelandic lamb, and geothermal water. Aurora viewing area available in winter months.
Security & customs
Iceland is in Schengen, so flights to/from other Schengen countries skip passport control; eligible ePassport travelers can use the automated eGates. Standard EU/Schengen 100ml liquid rules apply at security. The arrivals duty-free is famously good value — alcohol is far cheaper here than in town, within your allowance.
Travel tips
The Flybus to Reykjavik is the only practical transport option for most — book in advance online for discounts. The Blue Lagoon is 20 minutes from the airport and can be visited between flights — book well in advance. Keflavik has the best duty-free prices in Iceland; Brennivín aquavit and lopapeysa (wool sweaters) are the best purchases.
