Overview
Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) is the Rhineland's low-cost workhorse, serving both Cologne and the former capital Bonn with a route map dominated by Eurowings, Ryanair and Wizz Air. Its defining quirk is that it operates 24 hours a day — one of very few German airports without a night-flight ban — which is why you'll find very early and very late departures here that Düsseldorf and Frankfurt simply don't offer, often at prices to match. For budget travel into western Germany it frequently beats its bigger neighbors.
The airport has two terminals a short indoor walk apart: Terminal 1 (primarily Eurowings and Star Alliance carriers) and Terminal 2 (most other airlines, including Ryanair and Wizz). Check which one your airline uses before you set off, but don't overthink it — the walk between them takes only a few minutes and the train station sits conveniently between the two. The terminals themselves are functional 1970s-and-later Germany rather than glamorous: efficient, adequately supplied with food, and rarely overwhelming outside the summer holiday waves.
Getting to the city is straightforward: the S-Bahn (S19) and regional trains run from the airport's own underground station to Cologne's main station in about 15 minutes, and the same station has direct regional connections toward Bonn. The honest caveats are the ones common to low-cost operations everywhere — early-morning security peaks when several budget departures cluster together, and gate areas that fill up fast — so the boring two-hours-early advice applies on summer mornings here too.
Terminals
Two connected terminals a few minutes' walk apart: Terminal 1 is used mainly by Eurowings and Star Alliance partners, Terminal 2 by most other airlines including Ryanair and Wizz Air. The train station sits between them, so both are equally easy to reach by rail. Check your terminal before departure day, but a mistake costs minutes, not a missed flight.
Transport to city center
The S19 S-Bahn and regional trains leave from the underground station between the terminals and reach Cologne Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes — buy a VRS ticket from the machines or the DB/VRS apps and validate paper tickets before boarding. Regional trains and buses also connect toward Bonn. Taxis and rideshares are readily available but cost many times the train fare for a journey the train does faster at rush hour. For the airport's signature pre-6am departures, note the first trains may be sparse — check the timetable the night before or book a taxi.
Lounges
A small number of lounges, primarily in Terminal 1 airside, with pay-per-use and Priority Pass access alongside airline entitlements. Coverage is thin compared with major hubs — on a budget-carrier itinerary from Terminal 2, don't count on lounge access being practical.
Travel tips
Double-check your terminal (T1 vs T2) when you check in online — it's printed on the boarding pass and saves a small detour. The 24-hour operation means red-eye and dawn departures are common here: for anything before 6am, verify the first S-Bahn actually gets you there in time, and default to a taxi if it's marginal. Cologne's Christmas market season (late Nov–Dec) noticeably fills flights and trains — book both earlier than feels necessary. If your destination is Bonn, don't route through Cologne city; direct regional connections from the airport are faster.

Security and arrival
Germany is in Schengen: intra-Schengen flights skip passport control, while UK and other non-Schengen departures add a passport check. Off-peak, the airport is genuinely quick.
Distance to city
About 15 km southeast of central Cologne — roughly 15 minutes by S-Bahn or regional train to Köln Hauptbahnhof; Bonn is about 30 minutes in the other direction.
