Overview
AlUla is Saudi Arabia's spectacular open-air heritage region, home to Hegra (Mada'in Salih), the kingdom's first UNESCO World Heritage Site with its monumental Nabataean tombs. Dramatic desert canyons, the mirrored Maraya concert hall, and a restored old town make it a marquee new destination.
Getting around
Official shuttle buses and guided tours connect the dispersed sites, and a car is useful; the old town is walkable.
Local etiquette
Dress modestly and follow guide instructions at heritage sites. Respect the conservative local culture and avoid climbing on the protected rock formations.
Safety
AlUla is a carefully managed tourism zone and very safe, with attractions accessed via official tours. Take normal desert precautions for heat and sun.
