Overview
Amsterdam enchants with its network of 17th-century canals, world-class art museums, cycling culture, and a remarkably free-spirited, cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Getting around
Cycling is king. Trams cover the center. GVB day passes are good value.
Local etiquette
The Dutch value directness and punctuality, so be straightforward and arrive on time. Always stay out of the red bike lanes — cyclists have priority and won't slow down. Photographing sex workers in the Red Light District is strictly forbidden, and splitting the bill ('going Dutch') is completely normal.
Safety
Amsterdam is very safe. Watch for cyclists — they move fast and have priority. Be aware on the Red Light District at night.
