Overview
Athens is a city that invented democracy and drama — the Acropolis, Parthenon, ancient Agora, followed by vibrant street art, craft cocktails, and exceptional food.
Getting around
Metro (3 lines), trams, and buses. Walking in the historic center. Taxis should use meters.
Local etiquette
Greeks greet with a warm handshake or, among friends, a kiss on each cheek. Dress modestly when visiting churches and monasteries, covering shoulders and knees. Avoid the open-palm 'moutza' gesture, which is highly offensive, and expect leisurely, late dinners — restaurants fill after 9pm.
Safety
Athens is generally safe. Pickpocketing near the Acropolis and on the Metro Line 1. Some areas of Omonia are best avoided at night.
