Overview

Auckland — Tāmaki Makaurau in Māori — is New Zealand's largest city, built across a volcanic field between two harbours. A Pacific-facing multicultural city with a booming food scene, the base for exploring the Waiheke Island wine trail, and the gateway to Northland and the Bay of Islands.

Getting around

AT Metro trains and buses connect most areas. Ferries serve the inner harbour and Waiheke Island. Rideshares work well. Renting a car makes coastal day trips much easier.

Local etiquette

New Zealanders are relaxed and egalitarian, so treat everyone equally and avoid boasting. Respect Māori culture: a marae (meeting ground) has its own protocols, and you should remove shoes before entering. Tipping isn't expected, and it's polite to greet with a simple handshake or a friendly 'kia ora'.

Safety

Very safe city. Standard urban precautions apply in the CBD at night. The waterfront and main tourist areas are safe around the clock. Emergency services are excellent and responsive.
