Overview
Bogotá sits at 2,640 metres in the Andes, a sprawling capital that has been completely transformed in the past two decades. From the colonial cobblestones of La Candelaria to the world-class Gold Museum, the innovative transport system of TransMilenio to the booming restaurant scene of Usaquén, Bogotá is one of South America's most dynamic capitals.
Getting around
TransMilenio BRT (bus rapid transit) is fast but crowded. InDriver and Cabify are the safe taxi options. The new Metro is under construction. Cycling is growing — shared bikes available.
Local etiquette
Colombians are warm and polite — greet with a handshake and use courteous titles like 'señor' and 'señora'. Dress neatly, as appearance is valued, and keep conversations positive, avoiding drug-trade stereotypes. Be discreet with valuables ('no dar papaya' means don't give thieves an opportunity), and tipping around 10% is customary.
Safety
Safety has improved enormously but exercise heightened caution. Stick to La Candelaria, Usaquén, Zona Rosa, and the Ciclovía during the day. Avoid Localidad Santa Fe and southern areas. Don't use phones on the street. Use Cabify or InDriver — not flagged taxis.
