Overview

Buenos Aires is South America's most European city — a sweeping metropolis of wide Haussmann-style boulevards, passion-steeped tango halls, world-class steak restaurants, thriving arts districts, and a nightlife that starts at midnight and ends at dawn. BA is sophisticated, vibrant, and endlessly seductive.

Getting around

The Subte (metro) covers the centre efficiently. SUBE card for buses and metro — buy at kiosks. Cabify and Uber run here. Walking is ideal in Palermo, San Telmo, and Recoleta.

Local etiquette

Porteños greet with a single kiss on the right cheek, even among men who are friends. Meals are late and social — dinner rarely starts before 9pm — and lingering over coffee is part of the culture. Don't rush conversations, avoid sensitive topics like the Falklands/Malvinas, and dress stylishly, as appearance matters.

Safety

Exercise caution. Petty theft common in San Telmo market and La Boca tourist areas. Don't walk with phone out on San Telmo streets. Use registered taxi apps (Cabify, Uber). The Palermo and Recoleta neighbourhoods are safest for tourists.
