Overview
Cancun is Mexico's Caribbean crown jewel — turquoise waters, powdery white-sand beaches, all-inclusive resorts, and a gateway to ancient Mayan ruins, cenotes, and the islands of the Riviera Maya.
Getting around
R1/R2 buses run the length of the Hotel Zone cheaply. ADO buses connect to Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Rideshare availability is limited — use official taxis.
Local etiquette
Mexicans are warm and polite — greet with a handshake or a cheek kiss and use 'por favor' and 'gracias' generously. Tip 10–15% in restaurants and a few pesos for hotel and beach staff. Dress modestly when leaving the beach zones or visiting churches and ruins, and bargain respectfully in markets.
Safety
The Hotel Zone is heavily touristed and generally safe. Use official taxis or rideshare, stick to bottled water, and watch belongings on the beach. Avoid involvement with drugs entirely.
