Overview

Dar es Salaam — 'Haven of Peace' — is East Africa's most populous city and Tanzania's commercial capital. A rapidly growing Indian Ocean port city, it's the gateway to Zanzibar (just 2 hours by fast ferry), the base for Serengeti safaris, and home to excellent seafood, Swahili cuisine, and a growing arts scene in Oyster Bay and Masaki.

Getting around

Bolt ride-hailing app is reliable. Dala-dalas (shared minibuses) are local but chaotic. The BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) Dart system connects main corridors. Fast ferries to Zanzibar depart from the ferry terminal — book in advance.

Local etiquette

Tanzanians greet warmly — a handshake and the Swahili greeting 'jambo' or 'habari' go a long way, and elders are greeted first with respect. Dress modestly, especially in this largely Muslim coastal city; women should cover shoulders and knees. Use your right hand for greetings and eating, ask before taking photos, and dress conservatively near mosques.

Safety

Exercise caution. Stick to Oyster Bay, Masaki, Kariakoo market (daytime), and the waterfront. Don't walk alone at night or display valuables. Use Bolt app for taxis exclusively. Ferries to Zanzibar are regulated — use official operators only.
