Overview

Helsinki is the cool, design-obsessed capital of the world's happiest country — a city of neoclassical architecture on a Baltic peninsula, innovative restaurants (Nolla, Palace), the year-round outdoor swimming culture, and a design culture that gave the world Nokia, Marimekko, and Iittala. The city's relationship with its harbour and forests is intimate and defining.

Getting around

Trams, metro, buses, and ferries cover the city comprehensively. The Helsinki Card covers transport and many museums. City bikes (Fillarit) in summer. Walking is easy in the compact centre.

Local etiquette

Finns value personal space, quiet, and honesty, so avoid small talk and loud behaviour. Punctuality is essential. Sauna is a cherished ritual — go nude (genders usually separated), shower first, and keep your voice low and respectful; tipping is not expected.

Safety

One of Europe's safest capitals. Virtually zero violent crime against tourists. The city is safe to walk at all hours. Very clean and well-maintained.
