Overview
Formerly Saigon, HCMC is Vietnam's economic powerhouse — a chaotic, exhilarating city of street food, war museums, French colonial architecture, and rooftop bars.
Getting around
Grab (ride-hailing) is the easiest way. Motorbike rental for the adventurous. Metro line 1 now operational.
Local etiquette
Vietnamese greet with a slight bow or nod and a smile; use both hands when giving or receiving items. Dress modestly at temples and pagodas, removing shoes and hats, and never touch anyone's head or point your feet at people or altars. Bargain politely in markets, and avoid public displays of anger, as keeping calm and 'saving face' is valued.
Safety
HCMC is generally safe. Motorbike bag snatching is common — keep bags on the side away from traffic. Drink driving at night is a risk.
