Overview
Hong Kong is a dazzling fusion of East and West — a vertical city of soaring skyscrapers, dim sum institutions, traditional markets, and lush hiking trails, all wrapped around one of the world's most spectacular harbours.
Getting around
The MTR metro is fast, clean, and extensive. Iconic double-decker trams cross Hong Kong Island. The Star Ferry links Kowloon and the island.
Local etiquette
Greetings are usually a light handshake; offer and receive business cards and gifts with both hands. At dim sum, pour tea for others before yourself and tap two fingers on the table to say thank you. Never stick chopsticks upright in rice, avoid sensitive political topics, and queue patiently as orderly lines are the norm.
Safety
One of the safest cities in Asia with very low violent crime. Petty theft can occur in crowded markets. Typhoon season (May–November) can disrupt travel — heed warnings.
