Overview
Istanbul straddles two continents and thousands of years — the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Grand Bazaar, and Bosphorus create a travel experience like no other.
Getting around
Metro, tram, and funicular. Ferries across the Bosphorus. Istanbulkart covers all transit.
Local etiquette
Turks are warm and hospitable — accept offered tea, and greet with a handshake. Dress modestly at mosques: cover shoulders and knees, women should cover their hair, and everyone removes their shoes (scarves are often provided). Avoid visiting mosques during prayer times, use your right hand for eating, and remove shoes when entering a Turkish home.
Safety
The main tourist areas are generally safe. Avoid political demonstrations. Be wary of carpet shop invitations and taxi overcharging.
