Overview
Lima has quietly become South America's premier food destination — with Central, Maido, and La Mar among the world's best restaurants, and ceviche, tiradito, and causa rellena rewriting global cuisine. The grey colonial city above the Pacific cliffs hides exceptional museums, a thriving Miraflores clifftop scene, and a bohemian Barranco neighbourhood that buzzes at night.
Getting around
Taxis via apps are most practical. Metropolitano (BRT) connects north-south. Miraflores, Barranco, and Larcomar are walkable and pleasant. The seafront Malecón is a beautiful walking and cycling path.
Local etiquette
Peruvians greet with a handshake or a single cheek kiss and value courtesy and patience. Meals are leisurely, and it's polite to wait for the host before eating. Tip around 10%, dress neatly, bargain respectfully in markets, and always ask permission before photographing people in traditional dress.
Safety
Miraflores and Barranco are safe tourist districts — explore these freely. Historic centre (Lima Cercado) requires vigilance, especially around dusk. Don't venture to peripheral districts without local guidance. Use Cabify or Beat apps for taxis.
