Overview
Mumbai is India's commercial capital and its most cosmopolitan city — where Bollywood glitter meets colonial Gothic architecture, fishing villages meet billionaire tower blocks, and a street food scene is among Asia's most exciting. The city of dreams pulses with an energy unmatched on the subcontinent.
Getting around
The Metro is expanding rapidly. Suburban trains are fastest but crowded. Autos (tuk-tuks) work north of Bandra. Ola/Uber are easy and air-conditioned. Ferries cross to Alibaug and Elephanta Island.
Local etiquette
Greet with palms together ('namaste'), and use your right hand for eating, giving, and receiving. Dress modestly, especially at temples and mosques, where you remove shoes (and women may need to cover their heads). Avoid public displays of affection, never point your feet at people or shrines, and always ask before photographing people or religious ceremonies.
Safety
Safer than many Indian cities. Watch for pickpockets in crowded areas like Dadar and CST station. Use only metered taxis or Ola/Uber. Night travel is generally safe in tourist zones — use common sense in quieter areas.
