Overview
Punakha, Bhutan's former capital, lies in a warm, fertile valley at the confluence of two rivers. Its majestic dzong, set between the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu, is among the most beautiful fortresses in the country. Lower altitude makes it lush with rice terraces and subtropical greenery.
Getting around
Tour vehicles and taxis are the main transport, with short walks to reach the dzong and suspension bridge.
Local etiquette
Dress respectfully at the dzong, remove shoes before entering temples, and avoid pointing feet toward altars.
Safety
Punakha is very safe, with river rafting and mountain roads being the only notable hazards.
