Overview
Rio is pure spectacle — Christ the Redeemer overlooking Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Carnaval madness, samba in the streets, and stunning Guanabara Bay.
Getting around
Metro covers main tourist areas. Uber is safest for transport. Metrô is expanding.
Local etiquette
Cariocas are warm and physical — greet with a handshake or cheek kisses (one or two) and expect friendly, close conversation. Dress casually, but be discreet with valuables and cameras on the street and beaches. Tipping around 10% is usually included; ask before photographing people in favelas, and embrace the relaxed approach to time.
Safety
Rio requires high vigilance. Don't venture into favelas uninvited. Keep valuables concealed, especially on beaches. Use Uber over taxis.
