Overview
Stockholm — the 'Venice of the North' — is built across 14 islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. The world's first open-air museum (Skansen), the extraordinary Vasa warship museum, the Nobel Prize ceremony, and ABBA: The Museum are Stockholm institutions. Gamla Stan (Old Town) is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval city centres.
Getting around
T-bana (metro), trams, and buses cover the city well. The SL travel card is worthwhile for 2+ days. Archipelago ferries (Waxholmsbolaget) to islands. Walking is perfect in Gamla Stan and Djurgården.
Local etiquette
Swedes value equality, moderation ('lagom'), and personal space, so avoid boasting and respect quiet, orderly behaviour. Punctuality is essential, and removing shoes when entering a home is standard. Tipping is modest (round up or ~10%), and the 'fika' coffee-and-pastry break is a cherished social ritual.
Safety
Very safe capital. Normal urban awareness applies in the city. Public transport is excellent and safe at all hours. Archipelago boat trips and outdoor areas are very safe.
