Overview
Tashkent, Uzbekistan's sprawling capital, blends grand Soviet boulevards, ornate metro stations, and lively bazaars with pockets of old-town tradition. Rebuilt after a 1966 earthquake, it is Central Asia's largest city and a modern gateway to the Silk Road.
Getting around
The beautiful, cheap metro is the best way around, supplemented by ride-hailing app Yandex Go. The old town is walkable.
Local etiquette
Dress modestly, especially at mosques where women cover their heads, and accept the generous offers of bread and tea.
Safety
Tashkent is generally safe with low violent crime, though petty theft can occur in crowded markets and on transport. Police are visible and helpful to tourists.
