Overview
Tunisia's capital balances a UNESCO-listed medina of mosques and souks with the wide French-built avenues of the Ville Nouvelle. Just outside lie the romantic ruins of ancient Carthage and the blue-and-white cliffside village of Sidi Bou Said.
Getting around
The TGM light rail links the center to Carthage and Sidi Bou Said, supplemented by a metro tram, buses and taxis.
Local etiquette
Dress modestly, especially at religious sites, and bargaining is expected and good-natured in the markets.
Safety
Tunis is generally safe for tourists, though stay alert to pickpockets in the medina and on crowded transport, and avoid demonstrations.
