Overview

Vienna — Wien in German — is imperial splendour at its most complete. The capital of the Habsburg Empire left behind the Ringstrasse, the Vienna State Opera, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and a café culture so refined it's UNESCO-listed. Mozart composed here, Freud theorized here, and Klimt's Kiss was painted here. It also ranks as the world's most liveable city almost every year.

Getting around

World-class U-Bahn (metro), trams, and buses cover the entire city. The Ring road is a scenic tram route. Walking connects all the major Innere Stadt sights in an hour.

Local etiquette

Austrians are formal and polite — greet with a firm handshake, maintain eye contact, and use titles and 'Grüß Gott' as a greeting. Dress neatly, be punctual, and observe proper etiquette in coffee houses, where lingering is welcome but politeness is expected. Dress modestly in churches, and tip by rounding up to about 10%.

Safety

Exceptionally safe. One of the safest capitals in Europe. Well-maintained public spaces, reliable and frequent public transport at all hours, and excellent healthcare.
