Overview
Barbados is one of the more expensive Caribbean islands, with costs driven by its heavy reliance on imports, a strong tourism infrastructure, and a generally high standard of living. Accommodation and dining out are the biggest expenses, particularly along the west and south coasts where tourist facilities are concentrated. Budget travelers can manage costs by using the excellent public bus network and eating at local rum shops and casual eateries.
Notes
The government-run buses and shared minivans cost just 2 USD per ride and cover most of the island efficiently — using these instead of taxis can save significant money daily. Shopping at local supermarkets and eating at fish fry events like Oistins on Friday nights also offers authentic food at much lower prices than tourist restaurants.
