Overview
Bhutan is one of the most expensive destinations in Asia primarily because the government mandates a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of $100 USD per person per night, which is non-negotiable for most international visitors and must be paid in addition to all other costs. This fee, combined with required licensed tour operator packages that bundle accommodation, meals, and a guide, means independent budget travel is not possible in the traditional sense. Despite locals paying very little for food and transport, the mandatory fees and package requirements push overall traveler costs far above regional neighbors.
Notes
Traveling in a group significantly reduces per-person costs since guide fees, vehicle hire, and some package components are shared; visiting during the shoulder seasons of March–May or September–November also offers better value while still providing favorable weather.
