Overview

Botswana is one of the more expensive destinations in sub-Saharan Africa, primarily because its premier wildlife areas like the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park rely on high-cost safari lodges and guided game drives that can easily run hundreds to thousands of dollars per day. The government's deliberate 'high value, low volume' tourism policy keeps prices elevated, especially for park fees and remote lodge access. Urban centers like Gaborone are more affordable for everyday costs, but most international visitors come for the safari experience, which dramatically raises the average spend.

To save money, base yourself in towns like Maun or Kasane and book day-trip safari excursions rather than staying inside expensive private concessions; camping in national park campsites is also significantly cheaper than lodge accommodation while still offering excellent wildlife access.
