Overview

Burkina Faso is one of West Africa's more affordable destinations, with street food and local transport being very cheap, though mid-range and luxury options are limited outside Ouagadougou. Costs are driven upward by imported goods, limited tourism infrastructure, and the security situation which can necessitate guided travel or organized tours in certain regions. The CFA franc ties pricing loosely to the euro, meaning costs track somewhat with European economic conditions.

Notes

Eat at local maquis (informal open-air restaurants) and markets rather than hotel restaurants to dramatically cut food costs, and negotiate taxi fares before getting in as meters are rarely used. Staying in locally run guesthouses instead of international-brand hotels can also halve your accommodation budget.
