Overview
Burundi is one of the world's poorest countries and can be surprisingly affordable at the street level, but international-standard accommodation and dining in Bujumbura can push costs up considerably. Infrastructure limitations, security considerations, and a small tourism industry mean travelers often pay a premium for reliable services, transportation logistics, and safe lodging. Budget travelers who embrace local guesthouses and street food can get by cheaply, but mid-range and luxury options are limited and priced higher than regional peers.
Notes
Eating at local marché stalls and using shared minibus-taxis (called 'taxis-bus') for intercity travel are the best ways to keep costs down. Negotiate taxi fares in advance and exchange money at reputable bureaux de change rather than hotels for better rates.
