Overview

The Central African Republic is paradoxically expensive for international travelers despite being one of the world's poorest countries, largely due to extremely limited tourism infrastructure, import costs, and logistical challenges in getting goods to Bangui. Accommodation and transport costs are high relative to the local economy, and many goods must be imported, driving up prices for anything beyond basic local food. Security concerns also add costs as travelers often need to hire guides or security escorts for travel outside the capital.

Notes

Eating at local marché (market) food stalls and using shared minibus-taxis (bush taxis) rather than private taxis can dramatically cut daily costs; also bring sufficient USD cash as ATMs are extremely unreliable and card payments are rarely accepted outside top hotels.
