Overview
Chad is a challenging and relatively expensive destination for international travelers despite its low local wage levels, primarily because tourism infrastructure is underdeveloped and imported goods carry high costs. Accommodation options outside N'Djamena are extremely limited, and international flights are costly with few carriers serving the country. Most of a traveler's budget is consumed by accommodation, transport, and food at establishments catering to NGO workers and expatriates.
Notes
Eating at local street food stalls and markets can dramatically cut meal costs to under $3, and sharing vehicle transport (bush taxis) between towns is far cheaper than hiring private drivers, which can cost $100 or more per day in remote areas.
