Overview

Djibouti is a surprisingly expensive destination for its region, largely because it imports most goods and has a dollarized economy tied to the Djiboutian franc at a fixed rate. Accommodation and restaurant prices are elevated relative to neighboring African countries, driven by its role as a strategic port hub with a significant expat and military presence. Budget travelers will find it harder to cut costs here than in most of East Africa.

Notes

Eating at local Somali or Ethiopian restaurants in the African Quarter rather than hotel restaurants can cut meal costs significantly. Using shared minibus taxis (dabaabs) for local transport is extremely cheap compared to private taxis.
