Overview
The DRC is paradoxically expensive for international travelers despite being one of the world's poorest countries, largely due to poor infrastructure, security costs, mandatory permits, and a limited tourism economy that keeps prices high. Accommodation, visas, and internal travel — especially by charter flight to remote areas — are the biggest cost drivers. Budget travelers can get by on the cheap in local markets and guesthouses, but logistical challenges and safety considerations often push costs higher than expected.
Notes
Eat at local markets and small Congolese restaurants rather than hotel restaurants, as prices can be 5-10 times lower; also negotiate taxi fares firmly before getting in, as foreigners are routinely quoted inflated prices.
