Overview
Eritrea is generally an affordable destination in terms of local goods and food, but the government-controlled economy and mandatory use of the official exchange rate can make some services disproportionately expensive for foreigners. Travelers must also budget for obligatory travel permits to visit regions outside Asmara, and international flights into the country are costly due to limited airline access. The overall travel experience is constrained by bureaucratic requirements, including the need for a guide in certain areas, which adds to daily costs.
Notes
Eat at local tegtegna (traditional eateries) and street food stalls to keep meal costs very low, and use shared minibuses rather than private taxis for intercity travel. Obtain all required regional travel permits in advance from the Ministry of Tourism in Asmara to avoid delays and unexpected fees.
