Overview
Gabon is one of the more expensive destinations in sub-Saharan Africa, largely due to its oil wealth, high cost of imported goods, and limited tourism infrastructure. Libreville in particular is notoriously pricey, with accommodation and dining costs comparable to mid-tier Western cities. Budget travelers face challenges finding affordable options, as the country lacks a well-developed backpacker scene.
Notes
Eating at local marché (market) stalls and maquis (informal eateries) rather than hotel restaurants can cut food costs dramatically, and sharing taxi-brousse (bush taxis) for intercity travel is far cheaper than private transfers.
