Overview
Guinea-Bissau is one of West Africa's least-visited and least-developed destinations, making it relatively affordable at the street level, though limited tourist infrastructure means mid-range and luxury options are scarce and can be disproportionately pricey for what is offered. The capital Bissau concentrates most accommodation and dining options, while island-hopping to the Bijagós Archipelago adds significant boat transport and lodge costs. Import-dependent goods, international-standard meals, and reliable lodging push costs higher than neighboring budget destinations.
Notes
Eat at local market stalls and small family-run restaurants for authentic, very cheap meals, and negotiate taxi fares before getting in as meters are essentially nonexistent. Carrying sufficient CFA francs (XOF) in cash is essential, as ATMs are scarce and card payments are rarely accepted outside top hotels.
