Overview
Japan sits in the mid-to-high range for international travel, with accommodation and intercity rail (especially the Shinkansen) being the biggest cost drivers. Food can actually be quite affordable — even excellent ramen or sushi sets can cost under $10 — but urban hotels and transport between cities add up quickly. Tokyo and Kyoto tend to be the most expensive cities, while rural areas offer noticeably better value.
Notes
Purchase an IC card (like Suica or Pasmo) for seamless, slightly discounted local transit, and consider a Japan Rail Pass only if you plan multiple long-distance Shinkansen journeys — for shorter trips it often does not pay for itself.
