Overview
Kazakhstan is a moderately affordable destination for international travelers, with costs sitting below Western Europe but above much of Southeast Asia. Almaty and Astana are the priciest cities, particularly for accommodation and dining at international-style restaurants, while regional cities and rural areas are noticeably cheaper. Local transport and street food remain very inexpensive, making it easy to keep daily costs low if you travel like a local.
Notes
Use the extensive marshrutka (minibus) and metro networks in Almaty to slash transport costs, and seek out local stolovaya (canteen-style) restaurants where filling meals often cost under $3. Booking hotels well in advance in Astana is especially important during government events when prices spike significantly.
