Overview
Liberia is a relatively affordable destination by West African standards, though costs are higher in Monrovia than in rural areas due to the concentration of NGO workers and expats that has inflated prices for accommodation and dining. Basic local food and transport are very cheap, but imported goods, international-standard hotels, and Western-style restaurants can be surprisingly expensive. The USD is the de facto currency alongside the Liberian dollar, making transactions straightforward for American travelers.
Notes
Eating at local chop houses and market stalls rather than expat-oriented restaurants can cut food costs dramatically, often to under $3 per meal. Sharing taxis (known as 'drop taxis') instead of chartering private rides is the standard local practice and will save you significantly on transport.
