Overview
Mongolia is a relatively affordable destination by international standards, though costs vary sharply between Ulaanbaatar and the countryside. The biggest expense driver for most travelers is organized tours and transportation into the vast rural steppe, which typically requires private vehicles or guided expeditions. Accommodation in ger (yurt) camps varies widely in quality and price, and internal flights or long-distance transport to remote areas can add significantly to the overall budget.
Notes
Stick to local canteens called 'guanz' for authentic and very cheap Mongolian meals, and consider joining a group tour rather than booking a private driver to split fuel and guide costs across the countryside.
