Overview

Mozambique is a moderately affordable destination by African standards, though costs vary dramatically between the mainland cities and the upscale island resorts of the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos, which cater to a luxury market and can be very expensive. Budget travelers sticking to local chapas (minibuses), street food, and basic guesthouses can get by cheaply, but imported goods, seafood restaurants, and beach lodges push costs up significantly. The lack of developed tourism infrastructure in many areas means private transport and organized tours often become necessary expenses.

Notes

Use shared chapas instead of taxis for intercity travel and eat at local mercado restaurants serving piri-piri chicken and matapa to keep food costs very low. Booking island resort accommodation well in advance online can also secure significantly better rates than walk-in prices.
