Overview
Nicaragua is one of the most affordable destinations in Central America, with low costs for food, local transport, and accommodation making it very accessible for budget travelers. Street food and local comedores offer filling meals for just a few dollars, and chicken-bus travel between cities costs almost nothing. Mid-range and luxury options are available mainly in Granada, León, and San Juan del Sur, where boutique hotels and upscale restaurants cater to international visitors.
Notes
Use the local chicken buses (ordinary school buses) instead of tourist shuttles to slash transport costs dramatically, and eat at comedores or markets where a full plate of rice, beans, and meat rarely exceeds $3.
