Overview
North Macedonia is one of the most affordable destinations in Europe, with prices significantly lower than Western or even most Central European countries. The capital Skopje offers the widest range of accommodation and dining options, while food, transport, and drinks remain very cheap by international standards. The main cost drivers for travelers are accommodation upgrades and any organized tours to sites like Ohrid or Matka Canyon.
Notes
Eating at local kafanas and bakeries rather than tourist-facing restaurants can halve your food costs, and intercity buses are extremely cheap for getting between Skopje, Ohrid, and Bitola. Staying in Ohrid's old town during the shoulder season (May or September) also offers better rates than peak summer.
