Papua New Guinea is a surprisingly expensive destination for international travelers, largely due to its remote geography, limited tourism infrastructure, and heavy reliance on imports for most goods and services. Accommodation and domestic flights are the biggest cost drivers, as inter-province travel almost always requires flying given the lack of reliable road networks. Budget travelers have limited options and will still spend more than in comparable Southeast Asian destinations.

To reduce costs, base yourself in one location like Port Moresby or Madang rather than taking multiple expensive domestic flights, and eat at local markets and small roadside canteens where fresh produce and simple meals are very affordable. Always book accommodation well in advance as quality budget options are scarce and fill quickly.
