Overview

Sierra Leone is a moderately affordable destination by West African standards, though imported goods, ferry crossings to Freetown's peninsula beaches, and decent accommodation can push costs higher than expected. The capital Freetown tends to be the most expensive area, especially for accommodation and dining at restaurants catering to expats and NGO workers. Local street food and public transport remain very cheap, but limited tourism infrastructure means mid-range and luxury options carry a premium.

Notes

Eat at local chop houses and use shared poda-poda minibuses instead of private taxis to dramatically cut daily costs. Negotiating taxi fares in advance and avoiding the expensive water taxi in favor of road routes where possible also saves significantly.
