Overview
Somalia is a challenging and expensive destination for international travelers not because of high consumer prices, but due to the mandatory security costs — hiring armed guards, using vetted fixers, and staying in secured compounds or internationally-recognized hotels significantly inflates daily expenses. Basic goods and local food are relatively inexpensive, but the security infrastructure required for safe travel drives costs well above typical budget destinations. Mogadishu is more developed than other regions, with Somaliland (Hargeisa) being notably safer and more affordable.
Notes
Traveling through Somaliland rather than southern Somalia dramatically reduces security overhead and overall costs; Hargeisa is far more accessible and requires less extensive security arrangements than Mogadishu. Note that alcohol is largely unavailable due to Islamic law, so beer costs reflect non-applicability.
