Overview
South Sudan is one of the most expensive and logistically challenging destinations in Africa, driven largely by poor infrastructure, a fragile economy, and heavy reliance on imported goods. Accommodation and transport costs are particularly high relative to the quality offered, and international NGO and aid worker demand pushes hotel prices well above regional norms. Currency instability and limited banking facilities mean travelers must plan carefully and carry sufficient USD cash.
Notes
Always carry US dollars in small denominations, as card payments are virtually nonexistent outside top hotels in Juba, and local money changers may not have change for large bills. Eating at local market stalls or small local eateries rather than hotel restaurants can significantly cut food costs.
