Overview
Sri Lanka is a relatively affordable destination for international travelers, though prices have risen noticeably since 2022 following the country's economic crisis and currency stabilization. Accommodation and entrance fees to major attractions like Sigiriya and national parks are the biggest cost drivers, especially for mid-range and luxury travelers. Budget travelers can get by cheaply using local trains, tuk-tuks, and eating at local rice-and-curry spots.
Notes
Take the scenic train between Kandy and Ella instead of a private car — it costs under $3 and is one of the most beautiful rail journeys in Asia. Buying a local SIM card on arrival also saves significantly on connectivity costs.
