Timor-Leste is a surprisingly expensive destination relative to its level of development, largely because its small economy relies heavily on imports for most goods, food, and tourism infrastructure. Accommodation and dining at international-standard establishments can rival Southeast Asian capitals, while the limited tourism industry means fewer budget options and less competition to drive prices down. USD is the official currency, simplifying transactions for American travelers but offering no exchange-rate advantage.

Eating at local warungs (small Indonesian-style food stalls) and using shared minibuses called mikrolets for transport can dramatically cut daily costs. Negotiating taxi fares before departure is essential, as meters are rarely used.
