Overview
Uganda is a relatively affordable destination by international standards, with low costs for food, local transport, and accommodation in most cities. However, the overall travel budget can spike dramatically if you include gorilla trekking permits, which cost $700 USD each and are the primary draw for most visitors. Safari activities and national park fees also add significant expense beyond daily living costs.
Notes
Book gorilla trekking permits well in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority to secure availability, and consider traveling in the shoulder season (April–May or November) when lodge prices may be lower. Using shared minibus taxis (matatus) for intercity travel instead of private transfers can cut transport costs by 80% or more.
