Overview
Uruguay is one of the more expensive countries in South America, with costs notably higher than its neighbors Paraguay or Bolivia, though broadly comparable to Argentina at official exchange rates. Montevideo and the resort town of Punta del Este drive up accommodation and dining costs significantly, especially during the Southern Hemisphere summer season from December to February. Imported goods, quality restaurants, and tourist-facing services tend to carry a premium due to high import taxes and a relatively strong local currency.
Notes
Eating at local parrillas and mercados rather than tourist restaurants can cut food costs by 40-50%; also consider visiting Punta del Este in the shoulder season (March-April or November) when accommodation prices drop sharply compared to peak summer rates.
