Overview
Venezuela presents a complex cost picture for international travelers — local goods and services priced in bolivars can appear very cheap when exchanged at the parallel/black market rate, but imported goods, quality hotels, and tourist-oriented services are priced in USD and can be comparable to or more expensive than neighboring countries. Unreliable infrastructure, scarcity of goods, and safety concerns mean travelers often spend more than expected on secure accommodation, private transport, and imported food. The dual-currency reality means costs vary enormously depending on where and how you exchange money.
Notes
Use USD cash for transactions wherever possible, as it is widely accepted and gives you the most transparent pricing; avoid official exchange rates, which are far less favorable than the widely used parallel market rate used in everyday commerce.
